Thirty-two cadet players have been selected for the inaugural Aruna Cadet U-15 Invitational Championships, which will be held on October 17 at Eko Club in Lagos.
Quadri Aruna’s contributions to Nigeria’s table tennis development include a one-day competition targeted at discovering talent.
Aruna Sports Club and Academy, in collaboration with Eko Club, is sponsoring and organizing the competition.
The 32 competitors, comprising 16 boys and 16 girls, will be divided into four groups of four players each, according to the tournament’s format.
They are expected to play a round-robin format with the top two players in each group advancing to the second stage of the competition.
“I believe that helping young players is another way to raise the profile of the sport and also assist the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) to identify talents at a tender age. The tournament will have in attendance some of the members of the club, who are eager to support table tennis in the country,” Aruna said.
Majority of the players listed for the tournament are Lagos-based, while four (two boys and two girls) from Oyo State are to be sponsored by Aruna to the tournament.
Apart from the tournament, Aruna is also expected to play matches with some of the members of the club prior to the official launch of the Aruna Sports Club and Academy at Eko Club.
He has already donated four table tennis boards to the club.
