Bill Gates, co-founder and former CEO of Microsoft, said in a tweet on Monday that he and his wife, Melinda Gates, will be splitting up after 27 years of marriage.
“After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage,” the two said in a statement posted on Twitter. “We have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy, productive lives. “We ask for space and privacy for our family as we begin to navigate this new life” he announced on Twitter.
Gates, the fourth richest man in the world with a net worth of $130bn. He met Melinda met at Microsoft where she had been a marketing manager at the software company. They got married in January 1994 on a golf course on the Hawaiian island of Lanai, have three children together – Jennifer, Rory and Phoebe.
The announcement comes two years after Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon, said he and his wife, MacKenzie, were getting divorced.
