Buhari confers a new rank on the Chief of Army Staff.

President Muhammadu Buhari has promoted Farouk Yahaya, the newly appointed Chief of Army Staff, to Lieutenant General. Vice President Yemi Osinbajo assisted Buhari.

Top military brass, including the Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor, Chief of the Air, Air Marshal Isiaka Amao, Chief of Defence Intelligence (CDI), Maj General Sunday Adebayo, DG Department of State Service (DSS), Yusuf Bichi, and the Inspecting Officer, attended the ceremony at the Presidential Villa in Abuja at 10:00 a.m.

Members of the Cabinet, as well as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, Senator Ali Ndume, and his counterpart member of the House of Representatives Committee on Army, were present at the event, which took place shortly before the start of Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council (FEC), which is currently being presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Professor Ibrahim Gambari, the President’s Chief of Staff; Major-General Babagana Monguno, the National Security Adviser; Major-General Bashir Salihu Magashi, the Minister of Defense; and Hajiya Salamatu Yahaya, the Chief of Army Staff’s wife, were among those present.

Lieutenant General Ibrahim Attahiru, who perished in a military plane disaster on May 21, is succeeded by Lt Gen Yahaya.

Gen Yahaya succeeds Ibrahim Attahiru, a lieutenant general who perished along with eleven other army commanders and personnel in an aviation disaster on May 21.

The new army Chief formerly served as the Theater Commander of Campaign Hadin Kai, a counter-insurgency operation in the northeast.
