Following Argentina’s victory in the Copa America final on Saturday, Brazilian striker Neymar referred to Lionel Messi as “the greatest and best in history.”
After Brazil’s 1-0 loss at the Maracana stadium, Neymar hugged Argentina captain Lionel Messi, who he played with at Barcelona from 2013 to 2017 before joining Paris Saint-Germain.
“Losing pains me, it bothers me… it’s something I haven’t learned to live with yet,” Neymar, who was not part of Brazil’s squad that won the Copa America on home soil in 2019, said on social media. “When I lost, I went to offer a hug to the greatest and best in history that I witnessed playing.”
“My friend and brother MESSI, I was sad and I told him: ‘You beat me.’ I’m very sad for having lost. But this guy is awesome! I have great respect for what he has done for football and especially for me. I HATE TO LOSE!!!! But enjoy your title, football was waiting for you for that moment! CONGRATULATIONS BROTHER.”
Argentina’s first major triumph in 28 years, and Messi’s first international victory after four major finals defeats.
After four goals and five assists in the competition, Messi, a six-time Ballon d’Or winner, was chosen the tournament’s best player.
