South East gets secretary as micro-zoning crises threaten PDP convention

The intrigues, games of wits, and power plays that have characterized the process of determining which zone receives particular positions between North and South are, without a doubt, posing a major threat to the Peoples Democratic Party’s October 30 National Convention (PDP).

The selling of nomination forms for various National Working Committee (NWC) posts was supposed to start yesterday, but it didn’t since the two regions couldn’t come to an agreement on micro-zoning across the six geopolitical zones.

Although the PDP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) adopted the zoning committee’s suggestion last week, backed by Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

An official of the party at the PDP secretariat told our correspondent in confidence that though the office of the National Organising Secretary opened as early as 8:30a.m. yesterday, no aspirant for any of the offices turned up in what he ascribed to “the ongoing deliberations on which state should get what.”

According to him, “things are not going on smoothly particularly on which state in these zones to produce XYZ? The chairmanship position, for instance, is now a battle between the North Central and the Northwest. Until an agreement is reached in the ongoing deliberations on which state should get what, it will be foolish to rush to obtain nomination form,” he said.
